Most of the economy runs on cash. You will need cash to but anything in the Souk, in many restaurants and for rides and excursions at the beach.

Yes, Essaouira and Morocco overall are generally safe for tourists, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

Essaouira is considered one of the safest cities in Morocco. It's a relaxed coastal town known for its art scene, beaches, and medina. Most visitors find it peaceful and welcoming.

What to expect:

  • Friendly           locals, especially in tourist areas.
  • Low                  violent crime rates.
  • Occasional      petty theft or scams, like inflated prices in markets or pushy

vendors - more common in larger tourist cities.

Safety in Morocco (general overview):

Safe aspects:

  • Morocco          is politically stable.
  • Tourism           is a key part of the economy — police are generally responsive

                                       and visible in tourist zones.

  • Roads,             transport, and infrastructure are decent, especially in cities.
  • Petty crime:  Pickpocketing can occur, especially in busy places like

                                       Marrakesh, Casablanca, and Fez.

Cultural  sensitivity:

Morocco is a Muslim country, so modest clothing (especially for women) and respectful behavior go a long way.

Solo female travelers may experience catcalling or unwanted attention, but harassment is usually verbal and not dangerous

Be aware of:

  • Speed traps if you are driving – stick rigidly to the speed limits and always have your passport, driving licence and the address wher you are staying

  • Tap water isn’t always safe to drink — opt for bottled.
  • Pharmacies are easy to find and often well-stocked (parapharmacies cannot supply prescripton drugs).
  • For emergencies, dial 19 (police) or 15 (ambulance)
  • Private ambulance in Essaouira: +212 (0) 604 789191
  • There is a private hospital called Adiktal on the beach front in Essaouira. We have found it reliable, safe and affordable, if you have an emergency
  • If you have a less urgent medical problem we can recommend a good local general practitioner who speaks French and English, who is based in Ghazoua.
